A recent Community Health Needs Assessment report indicates a very large elderly population in the service area of local hospitals in Southwest Virginia compared to the state of Virginia and the United States (“Community Health Needs Assessment” 2015).
With an aging population in Southwest Virginia and the Baby Boomer generation reaching retirement age, the reduction of experienced nursing staff to serve patients has created stressors on the nursing staff of the Wellmont facility of Bristol Regional Medical Center.
The stressors that affect BRMC nurses include higher workloads, increased responsibilities, extended work hours, and entrance of new and less experienced nurses. Shortage of nurses affects patient outcomes and the ability to deliver quality patient care.
Nursing shortage is an identified nursing challenge at BRMC. To address the nursing shortage, BRMC collaborated with Virginia Highlands Community College to increase enrollment in the VHCC Nursing Program by the addition of 20 students to VHCC’s cap of 50 each academic year (Irby, 2017). The agreement will become effective with the 2017-2018 academic year.
The agreement was signed by organizational leadersof both BRMC and VHCC on May 23rdof 2017 (Irby, 2017). Greg Neal, president of BRMC, stated that this arrangement is an example of Wellmont’s commitment to achieve their mission ofsuperior care and Neal said, “This impressive development for the community and our patients will contribute greatly to our delivery of superior health care with compassion.
