Since we are meeting in the classroom for Week 4 (February 9), there is no weekly discussion for Week 4. Instead, you are required to answer two questions on this week’s material and to submit your answers as an Assignment by Wednesday, February 13.
First read Orvell, American Photography (38-59) Also review the slide presentation on Landscape Photography to be shown in class on Saturday.
Answer each of these two questions in essay-format. Each answer should be about one page to one and one-half pages or so. If you write your answers first in a word-processing program, copy and paste your answers into the Sakai message box below.
(1) View Photographers vs. Topographic Photographers: Miles Orvell separates “View Photographers” (Carleton Watkins and Eadweard Muybridge and, later, Ansel Adams–and Paul Strand) from “Topographic Photographers” (Timothy O’Sullivan and William Henry Jackson). ARE these two sets of photographers significantly different in their portrayal of the West? Defend your answer by referring to specific photos from the text and/or from the slide presentation.
(2) Pictorial vs. Straight Photography: A major stylistic development in photography occurred in the early 20th century with the shift from “pictorial” images to “straight” photography. Select one example of each approach to compare and contrast.* Identify the photos you are discussing by photographer and title. (If you can, also insert the pictures into your post, using the “picture” icon (on the third row, left, of the toolbar.)
· What is each photographer attempting to achieve in his (or her) photo?
· Which do you find more aesthetically pleasing? Why?

The most straight-forward way to find an appropriate landscape photograph in the pictorialist style may be to do a google search.
· Type pictorialism landscape and photography in the search line.
· On the line below the search line, select “images.”
· Select one of the photographs to analyze.
Ansel Adams is the best-known U.S. landscape photographer. Select one of his photographs to use as an example of “straight” landscape photography.
