Civility in the Workplace

Q 1:

The leadership skills that I would model for my fellow coworkers include skillful communication, interpersonal understanding, team building and diversity management. These skills will allow the coworkers to assert their views using non-threatening and non-judgmental cues, which will allow informative and supportive feedback based on honesty and trust (Finkelman, 2016). The skills will enable the coworkers to understand and accommodate Masaya’s personal and professional values and beliefs.

Q 2:

Incivility is an issue in the scenario. The other nurses lack the willingness to acknowledge Masaya’s personal values and beliefs, and nursing approaches. Furthermore, the nurses have not made the effort to establish a mutual ground with Masaya. This lack of respect and recognition of another person’s interests and circumstances is incivility. The incivility has led to the failure by the nurses to communicate effectively with Masaya and build a functional nursing team including the Filipino.

Q 3:

The common themes I have discovered in the article, video and civility index include respect for the individual, effective communication, team building, professional conduct, diversity management, feedback sharing, kindness and caring, and the willingness and effort to know about others.

Q 4:

There are several ways to improve my score on the civility index. First, I will engage in a genuine dialogue with my coworkers to ensure that I learn all the things I do not know about them. This measure will help me to become supportive and encouraging of others considering their unique strengths and weaknesses. I will be able to understand the causes of particular behaviors among my colleagues and respond professionally (Lachman, 2015). Secondly, I will adopt a more reflective and emphatic approach when dealing with my colleagues (Leiter, 2012). This approach will help me to accommodate and respond to other people’s desires and needs appropriately.
