The proposed research will address the emotional, behavioral, and academic adaptation of transgender youth in relation to their level of social and family support as family support has shown to be a protective factor against many different physical and mental health risks for those in the sexual minority. Transgender youth often experience victimization, rejection, and marginalization, which can place them at risk for poorer mental and even physical health (Simons, Schrager, Clark, Belzer, & Olson, 2013). Researching and reporting the relationships among parental support, quality of life, and depression in transgender adolescents will serve to support other longitudinal studies on the subject while bringing additional awareness of the injustices that this population endures giving advocates a stronger voice and more facts as they fight for change while also providing the parents of these children much needed understanding and support as well. Research ProblemThe research is relevant and significant for the counseling field. According to Simons, Schrager, Clark, Belzer and Olson (2013), transgender youth experience more rejection, marginalization, and victimization than non-transgender youth which placing them at a much higher risk for mental health issues (Mustanski & Liu, 2013). More specifically, this population is being hurt and many of their civil rights are at stake due to a lack of knowledge (Grossman & D’Augelli, 2007). Also, since the DSM-5 has changed the definition from some “disorder” (Gender Identity Disorder) to Gender Dysphoria this is an indication that although some understanding has been achieved, there is still much more to be understood (Davy, 2015). RESEARCH PRE-PROPOSAL3According to the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), transgender and gender non-conforming youth face excessive challenges at school, home, and even in the juvenile justice system. GLSEN’s national survey found that 75% of transgender youth feel unsafe at school, had lower GPAs, and most likely were to be absent from school due to their own concerns for safety. In addition to this staggering statistic is the fact that school officials often single out this population by punishing them for expressing their own identity.
