Nursing informatics (NI) is a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice (American Nurses Association, 2015). NI supports consumers, patients, nurses, and other providers in their decision-making in all roles and settings. In my current position as a clinical nurse manager and program nurse, there were many different functional areas of nursing informatics that were relevant. The three with the greatest relevance are administration, leadership, and education. Nurses have to be able to provide proficient care to patients of various cultural and diverse backgrounds. Clinical reasoning requires the practical ability to distinguish the relevance of evidence behind general scientific and technical knowledge and apply it to a particular patient (Benner, Hughes, & Sutphen, 2008). The most impactful way to improve clinical reasoning is to improve critical thinking skills through continuing education. TIGER Competencies was developed by the evaluation of what all nurses needed to have knowledge in to practice with computers (The TIGER Initiative, 2009).
