EBP Models

According to Nilsen (2015), the Iowa model and the diffusion of innovations theory constitute some of the main evidence-based practice models. The Iowa model guides the systematic decision-making by healthcare providers in the day-to-day delivery of care. It includes feedback loops to support the problem-solving steps. On the other hand, the diffusion theory guides healthcare providers in identifying the key issues to implementing EBP change in an organization. This model considers that individuals proceed through a set of actions during the adoption of an innovation.

The strategies for promoting EBP include the use of clinical decision support systems and research training for care providers. Clinical decision support systems guide clinicians in achieving accurate, complete and objective care decisions. These systems help clinicians to minimize errors or omissions in their day-to-day practice. Research training for care providers focuses on imparting the skills and knowledge vital to the integration of EBP in different clinical settings (Black, Balneaves, Garossino, Puyat, & Qian, 2015). A clinician with appropriate research training can analyze accurately the available evidence and determine the application of such evidence to the care process.

Research utilization concerns the critical analysis of research findings and determination of the application of the findings in the clinical practice. The research findings are the sole source of evidence in research utilization. On the other hand, quality improvement focuses on the identification and application of the best systems, processes and practices for the delivery of care. The quality improvement goals focus on the best processes rather than developing the nursing science. Evidence-based practice focuses on the identification, evaluation and application of the best and most recent evidence in clinical decision making to ensure the best care outcomes (Masters, 2013). It incorporates aspects of research, research utilization and quality improvement to ensure proper responses to patients’ needs and preferences and different clinical situations
