The following are suggestions to include in next years orientation to English course in order to best
prepare students for success.
• Provide the required reading from Reader’s Choice before the course begins.
There is a significant amount of reading required for this course. There was confusion as to which
textbook was required for the Fall 2018 English course which did have some students behind in their
reading; however, the amount of reading required is extensive
• Encourage students to refresh knowledge on proper APA citing format.
There are several different citing formats that students may have learned over the years, knowledge
of which format will be encouraged to be used will allow the student to refamiliarize themselves it,
preparing them for the expectation of the assignments
• The Online Hybrid program information suggests that the hours spent per week on the course
are 10-12, encourage students to allow for more hours than that.
The Hybrid program requires the student to study two courses at one time. The English
course alone requires more than 10 – 12 hours of study due to the reading and
assignments. The addition of time management suggestions may be helpful as well. Many
students are working full time and some may have other family responsibilities.
I believe that sharing these three things with the student before they begin the English course will better
prepare them for success.
