Guideline For Learning Objective Paper
This requirement will be met with a 2-3 page paper on the following history topic. Within the time period of this course, choose a person, event or movement and explain why you think your choice made a significant contribution to history. This paper is 15% of your grade. Follow the posted guide lines in this syllabus.
1. Appearance. Papers must be typed and double-spaced, using 12 point font. Times New Roman is the required font. Leave 1- inch margins all around.
No Handwritten Work Will Be Accepted.
2. Structure of the papers. Unless you are an acknowledged expert in the art of paper writing, you will benefit from outlining your ideas before writing them in a final draft. Please use this tried and true format for your papers: Introduction (including thesis statement), supporting evidence, and conclusion.
3. Style. You will be expected to use the MLA style of citation. For example: “Some observers saw the cultivated aristocratic life style as a veneer” (Nash 115). It is a good idea to purchase the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers to help you with this method of citation. You must also arrange the bibliography according to this manual. A Works Cited/Bibliography is required.
4. Proper quotations vs. plagiarism. Plagiarism means submitting work as your own that is someone else’s. For example, copying material from a book or other source without acknowledging that the words or ideas are someone else’s and not your own is plagiarism. If you copy and author’s words exactly, treat the passage as a direct quote and supply the appropriate citation. If you use someone else’s ideas, even if you paraphrase the wording, appropriate credit should be given. You have committed plagiarism if you purchase a term paper or submit a paper as you own that you did not write.
Your papers must be written in your own words. If you use an author’s exact words you are required to use quotation marks. If the quotation exceeds two sentences, it should be indented (5 spaces) and single-spaced. Any information you get from a source must be cited, even if you do not use a direct quotation. Remember that putting the author’s ideas into your own words (paraphrasing) is not simply changing a word or two. Above all, these papers are to be your own personal creation—a product of your own writing. Papers that are plagiarized will not be accepted. These papers will receive a failing grade.
5. Writing. All papers must be written in correct, grammatical English. They will be graded not only on the basis of content but on writing as well. Watch spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure and word usage because they all contribute to the overall grade of your paper.
