U.S. Healthcare System
The strengths and weaknesses of the U.S. healthcare system has been a hot topic for many years and especially in the last decade due to the introduction of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the most recent presidential election. The healthcare system as it currently constructed has more weaknesses than is has strengths. The same characteristic of the system can even be labeled as strength and a weakness, depending on who is asked. The one thing that everyone seems to agree on is the imperfect nature of the system as it’s currently constructed. Many opinions are offered on what should the ideal healthcare system look like, based on what one believes are the true strengths and weaknesses. Highly Debated Strength and Weakness Arguably the most contested and debated topic in healthcare today is the ACA. The positions for this debate tend follow political parties. Since March of 2010, when the ACA was signed into law, most democrats have viewed this move as a major strength of the healthcare system while most republicans believe it’s one of the system greatest weaknesses. ACA as a Healthcare Strength The people who believe the ACA is a strength of the U.S. healthcare system point to a number of things that support their opinion. One of the major strengths of the ACA is that it will slow the rise of the countries healthcare costs (Rosenbaum, 2011). This is done by providing insurance to millions of people who were previously uninsured and making preventative care free (Rosenbaum, 2011). This in turn leads to decrease of preventable diseases and less sick people that put a strain on the system. Another strength is that under the ACA, insurance companies can’t deny anyone coverage because of their pre-existing conditions (Rosenbaum,
