Influenza, or “flu” as it is commonly called, is an important health concern across the United States and around the world. The standard flu season is said to run from November through April of the following year. In the last several years, some areas have seen a shift in season outbreak or extension of season end date.
It is important to understand the signs and symptoms of the flu, how it is transmitted, and how to protect against and prevent the spread of the virus in the community. Signs, Symptoms and Transmission The flu is generally characterized by fever >100.4 F, chills, body aches, headache, fatigue, dry cough and chest discomfort. These symptoms may appear between one and four days after exposure to the virus (Howard County Health Dept. March, 2017).
The most contagious period is the two days after symptom start, and the virus is spread mostly at close range (less than 3 feet) by contact with or breathing in of droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person. Covering of the mouth and nose with hands or tissues, crook of the arm, or a mask does not change the explosive force of the cough or sneeze. It has to escape somewhere, and these techniques merely redirect the cough plume with droplets remaining suspended in the air for many minutes (Thomas,Roger E. 2016).
The spread of influenza virus among school age children is important in determining the spread of the flu throughout the community, and providing annual influenza vaccinations to these children can provide community-wide protection.
