Patient-centered Research
I have learned that the integration of the perspectives of medical practitioners, patients and other stakeholders enhances health decision making and the balancing of the needs and interests of the relevant parties. Patient-centered research should focus on responding to clinical questions that incorporate the unique perspectives of patients. These questions include the design of care delivery and health policies in consideration of patients’ characteristics such as age, gender, race, culture and socioeconomic status. The research results guide medical practitioners in making decisions that are relevant to the end users of healthcare. The inclusion of patient perspectives during research influences healthcare practices and views that advance the patient’s interests and promote the attainment of desirable health outcomes for the individual (Frank, Basch, & Selby, 2014).
Patient-centeredness requires that medical practitioners perceive each patient as having unique characteristics rather than focusing solely on the disease. This approach allows the establishment of an alliance between the patient and nurse. Patient-centered research contributes to improved nursing outcomes by encouraging a nurse-client relationship based on the communication and pursuit of the patient’s needs and preferences. This relationship allows the nurse to implement the desirable health outcomes by establishing a partnership with the patient and involving him in the planning and execution of various nursing interventions (Saha, Beach, & Cooper, 2008). For example, a nurse who understands a patient’s cultural values can design nursing interventions that align with the patient’s norms and values. Such a nurse can implement a treatment option that caters to the patient’s interests. Patient-centered research gives nurses the knowledge required to implement support systems for patients with unique characteristics. These systems include education and communication, and interpretation services that allow the patient to participate in making decisions about his care.
