Problem
Hospital-acquired infections generally refer to the different illnesses that hospital staff acquires as a result of interacting with the patients. The population of persons that are referred to is the hospital staff who have been found to have a higher chance of suffering from the hospital acquired infections as a result of failure to wash their hands. The PICOT analysis is important as it allows for the analysis of health issues. Analyzing the issues allows an individual to come up with a solution. hospital acquired infection which affects the staff members. The intervention
for the issue would be promoting or rather creating awareness for the need to
wash hands after the hospital staff performs their obligations and before they
even deal with a sick patient. Different antiseptics and soaps including the
common antibacterial soap, Dettol, can be used to achieve the end results.
Researchers have found that hand washing is necessary as it kills germs. Most
antibacterial soaps actually eliminate more than 90% of the germs that an
individual might have. The intervention is suggested on the basis that most
infections are caused by germs that are found in human hands; this is because
the hands tend to get in contact with a lot of things most of which are not
sterilized (Aiello,
Larson, & Sedlak, 2008). The hospital staff will, later on,
consume food without washing their hands which mean that the food that they
consume is actually infected with bacteria. Thus, the intervention would be
appropriate to deal with the problem.
Comparison
The comparator that can be applied to deal with the issue is the use of the masks. Using masks will also protect the hospital staff from the hospital acquired infections as the masks will protect various body parts. This means that they will not inhale bacteria like the tuberculosis bacteria which is air-borne and other airborne viruses. The comparator might be a better intervention as it protects the staff members from a wide range of bacteria. The nurses can use the masks when they are taking care of the patients who suffer from communicable diseases (Wilcox, 2009).

The expected outcome of applying the intervention will result in reduced infections. This means that fewer members of the hospital staff will be affected; cases of hospital acquired infections will reduce.
