Quantitative Research Design I would use the correlational research design to conduct a quantitative study. Several factors make the correlational research design suitable. First, it allows the examination of the relationships among various variables in a study without the manipulation of the independent variables. A descriptive study describes the phenomenon under investigation without identifying the cause-and-effect relationships between the different variables. On the other hand, quasi-experimental and experimental research designs involve the manipulation of at least one independent variable (Burns, Gray, & Grove, 2014). However, the moral and ethical issues involved in nursing research limit the use of experimental research methods. For example, the study of the relationship between secondhand smoking and the risks of cardio-respiratory problems cannot use the experimental method because it would require the researcher to subject the experimental group to numerous sessions of secondhand smoking before drawing an objective conclusion about the cause-and-effect relationship. Secondly, the correlational research design is less expensive in comparison to the experimental designs. I would use surveys to collect the research data. I would use a combination of in-person and telephone interviews. This approach will enable me to access a substantial sample size and generate sufficient data and information to draw an objective conclusion. The survey method of data collection is affordable, convenient and consumes less time. Furthermore, it provides ways for the researcher to verify and validate the data to minimize inconsistencies in the generated information (Profetto-McGrath, Polit, & Beck, 2010).
