Discussion: Your Research Problem and Social Change

Major risks, challenges and issues are the common things that affect projects. Many projects fail to manage resources, and fail to realise outcomes, goals and benefits due to poor project management (Dyer, Godfrey, Jensen, & Bryce, 2016). Project failure rates range from 19% up to 49% (Nwagbogwu, 2011). During the past centuries project management have been the focus among organisations because managing projects produce increasing issues which lead to failure. Good practices in project management introduce ways to improve projects by introducing effective process, policies and practices (Mirza, Pourzolfaghar, & Shahnazari, 2013).

The general business problem is that most project managers view project success as delivering a service or product and are unable to identify real reasons of failure and interruption which is the increased inconsistency, miscommunication, mismanagement, and confusion about the acceptance criteria factor (Kendrick, 2015). The specific business problem is that project managers do not understand how to identify failures on projects and lack to understand effective practices, leadership, culture, and corporate processes which will aid in increasing the rate of project success.

Luke and Chu (2013) points out that a research is supposed to bring a positive social change in the society. In the case of this research, it will help address the problem of strategy failures and provide solutions on how the problem can be addressed effectively in the future.

Part 8A

Write an evaluation of ethical considerations for independent scholars within the   research process. In your evaluation, do the following:

  • Briefly describe your problem statement and the topic you have chosen for your individual   Study.
  • Analyze any potential biases, assumptions, and attitudes that may impact your   Study, including how you identified these issues.
  • Explain potential strategies for addressing and limiting the negative impact of your own biases, assumptions, and attitudes on your study. Be sure to provide scholarly examples to support your explanation.

 Discussion 1: Reflecting on Bias

The business problem being investigated is the one on the factors that make project management more successful in an organization. Project management is critical when it comes to long-term success and profitability of an organization. However, most of the projects fail due to failure in processes that end up failing due to various reasons. The research intends to solve this problem by carrying out a quantitative study to help understand different factors that can help in making projects successful in an organization.

One of the assumptions that might impact negatively on my study is that of assuming that existing information about the topic of the study, as this may create a bias toward any new information that might be generated during data collection process (Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill, 2015). Additionally, social desirability might be a form bias that will impact on the ability of the respondents to provide accurate information in fear of going against what the society what to hear (Chenail, 2011). Furthermore, the issue of past experiences relating to the subject of the study might create personal bias toward the study, resulting in carrying it with intention of producing certain outcomes (Pannucci and Wilkins, 2010).

One of the strategies to avoid bias during the study will be to first assume that I have nothing I know about the topic of the research. This will help to avoid using the knowledge I know about the subject of the study from past experiences as the basis of drawing final conclusions. The strategy will ensure that all results obtained in the study will not be manipulated in any way in order to meet a certain outcome.

PART 8B

Write an assessment of the   research process within the context of the scholar-practitioner model. In your assessment, do the following:

  • Describe how your particular   Study might bring about improvement on management or business practice.
  • Reflect on the most important components of the   research process from your perspective as an independent scholar.

Discussion 2:   Study and the Scholar-Practitioner Model

My   study is going to bring numerous improvements in the areas of project management in many industries It aims to identify factors that contribute to failure of projects, thereby, allowing managers to understand them so as to avoid them in the future. In addition, it will mainly look at factors that contribute to the success of projects; given that only 10% of projects are successful (Ivančić, 2013). Thus, the study will provide new set of knowledge on how managers can use practices and implement them in an effective way.

The business problem component is important as it help to identify a certain problem existing and then specifying the area that a study is going to address in trying to address the problem (Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill, 2015). On the other hand, the component on the nature of the study is crucial as it provide information regarding the study methodology and design, explaining why they are suitable for the type of research being carried out (Bryman and Bell, 2015). Additionally, the component of the significance of the research, enable a research to explain the way the study being undertaken will be important in addressing a certain problem. It gives information regarding the social change that the study intends to bring once it is successfully completed. Finally, the literature review component is crucial as it help in summarizing the already known knowledge about the study being carried out and how they relate by the subject of the research. Hence, it is useful in identifying the possible research gaps that needs to be filled by the study being undertaken by the researcher.
