Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: Double check how to set up an APA title page. There should the “running head:” included in the header somewhere. If you’re looking for resources on how to do this, Purdue Global has some really good resources for APA formatting on our resources page.

SC235 General Biology I – Human Perspectives

Dr. Margaret Kincaid

Habitat and Niche

Human habitat differs sharply with that of animals in most instances (Mitchell, 2017). This is because most animals tend to have specific climatic preferences that suit their survival and adaptation. Human beings however are not any different, but can stretch far much than animals to fit in various climates all over the world. In the instance of a cheetah in the Sahara Desert, it is important to note that Cheetahs have specific environments in which they can survive. In the Sahara, the desert sustains the cheetah simply because they do not need much water for survival. This habitat is important since they can get adequate prey that can help them survive (Groom, 2017). This habitat is very favorable for cheetahs to survive providing the important elements that encourage their prolonged life span. My habitat on the other hand is an urban environment, with a very busy culture. There are numerous settlements in my habitat, with every other person acting independently. The environment is supportive of human survival since it has various houses established so as to provide shelter. There is enough public space that enhances human interaction and physical activities. This habitat is environment friendly since there is proper waste management, and adequate food supply as well as shelter. Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: In the instructions, you’re asked to explain the difference between your niche and the niche of an ecologist studying cheetahs. In your comparisons, you’re talking about the environment in regards to the cheetah, not to the ecologist that is studying him. Make your comparisons in relation to the ecologist, not the cheetah. What are the habitat and niche roles of the ecologist studying the cheetah? This will allow you to draw more comparisons. Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: What the weather in your environment? Can you draw any similarities here? Temperature and weather can be a big part of habitat discussion. Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: This is your only comment on biological adaptation. What about the environment of the ecologist studying the cheetah? Will they have any biological adaptations?

From the two habitats, there is a sharp difference in the sense that the assigned habitat is a dessert, whereas my habitat is an urban settlement. Desserts are known to be dry, with less or no settlements at all, disadvantaging human survival. In this case, human beings will not find such an environment conducive for their survival and adaptation, as it will be strenuous for them. Cheetahs however find the habitat sustaining, with adequate resources they require to live. The desert lacks water, which is important for human survival as is present in urban areas (Shahabuddin, 2018). The desert has extremely hot temperatures that can be harmful to the human survival. The cheetah would equally find it weird when it comes to the urban settlement since they could not have adequate space and the requirements that would sustain their living. The similarity however comes when both the habitats sustain the two species, and provide the favorable environment for their living. Besides the two habitats are uniquely packaged to provide the basic survival requirements. Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: *desert Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: *Deserts Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: How would the ecologist do in this habitat? Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: Can you think of any more similarities between your two environments? You thought of a lot of differences, but there’s not a lot on similarities. Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: Where is the explanation of characteristics that would be beneficial for survival in each habitat? Is this the only sentence? What about for the urban environment?

Closely looking at the niche, the cheetah is known for hunting. They do so in attempts to find food (predators) and even their mates (Marker, 2017). Bearing in mind that they are lonely animals, they spend most of their time hunting as their basic survival means. Their speed and the nature of their claws are central adaptation features to their niche. Human species on the other hand have utilized technology in an attempt to reduce the constraint found in their environment with regard to their predators’ parasites and diseases. This has made them unique, as they have exercised control over their niche, which sharply differs from that of animals. Initially humans were known for a number of activities, among them agriculture and pastoralism which changed gradually with the increase of population and the verge of industrial revolution. In essence, the bottom line principle is that the human niche is coupled with series of technological advancements which makes the whole process complicated. Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: While this is interesting, it’s not describing your niche, but rather all of humanities’ niche. Can you describe your niche in an urban environment? What’s your role in your environment? The rubric wants you to draw instances between the ecologist studying the cheetah and your personal habitat. Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: Also, can you explain how human’s have adapted to the two habitats and niches? What are the separate adaptations?

When human beings are exposed to the habitat of the cheetah, life will be far way difficult. This is because the climate is less favorable for human survival. The basic needs such as water, will be hard to find and as such subject to becoming a predator to the cheetahs (Boast, 2017). This will therefore mean that the human population will keep reducing each day, to an extent that it will be beyond mitigation. Chances are high that the human population will become extinct, and this will bear a direct consequence on the general population. In instances when human beings are exposed to the cheetah’s niche, chances are high that the animal population will become extinct, more specifically those which they feed on. The ecological balance will be altered, leaving a void in the equilibrium. This has the implication of altering the balance and as a result, the sustainability and continuity of the human species will be totally messed up.

Cheetah as a biotic component of the habitat has very interesting survival features (Nyhus, 2017). However, if humans are subjected to the habitat and niche, numerous cultural aspects make adaptation and survival even easier. Culture is the way of life of a people, explaining what to be done, and what is to be avoided. Culture sets the goals and means to equally achieve them. In essence, the central point of focus is the directives that even makes survival easy. These cultural adaptations however have been challenging in the sense that they have stipulations and means that do not necessarily address the presenting threats and concerns. In this light, the cultural adaptation fails to attain the intended adaptation and survival purposes. Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: You’re mentioning the definition of cultural adaptations, but not giving any examples of cultural adaptations. What cultural adaptations would a human need to make in this instance? Comment by Cecelia R Chapin: You need a conclusion paragraph.
