This week we will be looking at one artwork in depth: Velásquez’s Las Meninas. The painting provides a good example of the range of art-historical interpretation a single artwork can inspire, while remaining resistant to any definitive “take”. Though much is known about this painting, it remains enigmatic. We will read articles by Steinberg who interpreted this painting, and we will note his approach to analyzing the visual and contextual evidence Velásquez’s painting, which has been said by some to be the greatest painting of all time.
