Week 3 Discussion

Q 1:

My belief about the concept of the person is that it concerns the nurse, patient, and the patient’s family and friends. I believe that the concept of the person not only includes the receiver of care but also the provider of care and other people who play supportive roles in caring for the patient. I believe that the concept of the environment concerns the settings in which the patient receives care. My belief about the concept of health is that it concerns the patient’s wellbeing and the relevant treatment and preventive interventions. I believe that the concept of nursing concerns the processes implemented by a nursing when caring for the patient.

Q 2:

Idealists see the world in a perfect manner. Some of the important concepts in idealism include balanced individuals and society. On the other hand, realists assume that the ideas, experiences and objects in the universe are only verifiable through inquiry (Powers & Knapp, 2010). Therefore, an idealist sees things hopefully while a realist assesses situations objectively. I consider myself as a realist-idealist with a strong tendency towards realism. I base my day-to-day nursing practices on nursing theories and evidence. However, aspects of my spiritual, moral and emotional experiences also influence my nursing practice.

Q 3:

Values constitute the individual’s ideas about the appropriate behaviors. On the other hand, beliefs constitute the individual’s opinions and feelings about the Self and the world (Johnson, 2016). One difference between values and beliefs is that values shape the individual’s behavior while beliefs shape his reality. The other difference is that values are positive while beliefs can be constructive or undesirable. Thirdly, while individuals tend to retain the same values throughout their lives, one can easily change his beliefs.
