Kidney stones are formed by an abundance of dissolved minerals, mostly comprised of calcium that is found within the kidneys. Gallstones are comprised of bile, calcium and cholesterol found in the gallbladder and bile ducts. Both kidney stones and gallstones are quite painful, the symptoms often occur suddenly, and prevention is the key to avoid an attack. Kidney stones develop in your bladder, they begin to form when urine becomes highly concentrated, and allows mineral deposits to form. These deposits can be small or large. They pass through the body via the urinary tract. Due to the size, often they can be painful when the stones try to pass via the bladder and ureters. Symptoms often do not occur until the stone(s) exitthe bladder and pass into the ureters. Signs and symptoms include severe pain that occurs in yourback, abdomen and groin; red, brown, or pink urine, and an elevated temperature and flu like symptoms. Kidney stones are linked to individuals who drink less then the required sixty-four ouncesof fluids per day. Uric acid is an integral part of maintaining the pH level of urine. When the pH level becomes acidic, minerals have the perfect environment to crystalize and form kidney stones. Medical conditions are also known to lead to the formation of kidney stones; Crohn’s disease, Dent’s disease, and urinary tract infections are the most common. There has been research conducted that taking supplements may also increase your risk of developing kidney stones. Although calcium and vitamin D are essential minerals, exceeding the daily requirement can lead to elevated calcium levels in the blood and urine and the risk of developing kidney stones is increased dramatically. Additionally, maintaining a proper weight, diet and exercise can decrease a persons’ risk for kidney stone
