Discussion: Week 7
Work-related stress causes depression, anxiety, irritability, isolation, sleeping difficulties and other psychological effects. The accumulation of work-related stress can lead to physical problems such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity and a dysfunctional immune system (American Heart Association, 2017). The physical and emotional effects of work-related stress cause the individual’s relationships and performance in the workplace to decline drastically. These effects limit the prospects of career longevity for the individual.
Several strategies can increase the individual’s visibility within an organization. The first strategy is the active participation in meetings and other events that offer the individual the opportunity to present and demonstrate his skills and knowledge to his team, department and the organization. Secondly, one can increase his visibility by volunteering to represent his team or department in important meetings, committees or projects involving other teams and departments (MindTools, n.d.). This strategy offers the individual numerous opportunities to interact with coworkers, supervisors and the top management in the organization.
Time management concerns the conscious allocation of the available time to different activities with the objective of increasing one’s productivity. On the other hand, life management concerns making decisions about the activities to do, how to do the activities, when to do the activities, and the persons that one will involve in doing the activities (Mayberry, 2015).
The first impression refers to the way the individual portrays himself in his first encounter with another person. A person who is polite, courteous and attentive makes a positive impression in his first counter with a colleague in the workplace (DuBrin, 2010). On the other hand, a person who interrupts other people during conversations and makes harsh remarks about others creates a negative impression. Burnout refers to the state of emotional and physical exhaustion leading to reduced personal performance.
